What is a site seal?

When dealing with SSL certificates, a site seal is a free logo that is normally included with an SSL certificate. This logo can be placed anywhere on your website, and is normally placed to show that your website is reputable and insured by an SSL certificate.

One of the main benefits of having an SSL certificate installed on your website is a boost to consumer confidence. In today’s online world, it can be somewhat hazardous to input sensitive information into a website that is not secure. If your website clearly displays your site seal and other security methods, a customer may be more likely to purchase a product and feel confident about their transaction.

There are mainly two different site seals that can be included with SSL certificates.

1. Static Site Seal

A static site seal is simply a static graphic that says something like “Secured by Comodo”. This does not have any additional content that would link this secure status to your website, so theoretically anyone could place this site seal on their website. An example of this from a GeoTrust certificate is below:

2. Dynamic Site Seal

A dynamic site seal is everything that’s included in a static site seal, but more. A dynamic site seal is normally automatically generated by the SSL certificate provider, and can include the current date and time. The big plus in a dynamic seal is that when the user clicks the graphic, a small pop-up is shown that is generated on the SSL certificate issuer’s website confirming that the SSL certificate is legitimate and that the transaction is secured.

The dynamic site seal is the way to go when purchasing an ssl certificate. Having a third party validate the security status of your website gives that extra confidence that the customer may not feel initially.
